Holy Wow! That is some Giveaway.

On that fantastic note, take it away Emma!

Thank you so much for letting me showcase my forthcoming steamy action-romance novel SHANNON’S LAW. It’s  the second in my PASSION PATROL series - stories where sassy female cops lock up the criminals and always get their man.

February marks the start of my “Pinterest Reveal Virtual Book Tour” in the run-up to the launch on the 28th February 2014.

Every day there are feature posts on topics relating to SHANNON’S LAW on blogs all around the world.  They’re all linked together on one big Pinterest Board. Each post replaces a ‘mystery’ silhouette that was posted in January. Information will be revealed about the food, characters, jewelry, locations, venues and all sorts of weird and wonderful research behind the book. I saved all  my notes and photos as I was writing, on a private Pinterest Board and now I can share them with you.

Today’s subject is The British Allotment

Allotments in Shannon’s Law

Several events in Shannon's Law involve an area of land in the village of Fleetworth-Green known as “the allotments”. North American readers will probably be more familiar with the term “Community Garden”. In England  allotments are parcels of land leased to individuals for the cultivation of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Their form  dates back to the old “Strip System” of peasant farmers that existed long before the industrial revolution. From 1604 onwards, laws were created in England reducing the amount of common land available to poor people. Political opinions divide on the issue, but there is no doubt that it left the poor increasingly without access to the land and countryside. Landowners enclosed the once common land and pushed up rents. It was part of a process that developed a miserable race of urban wretches tied to short lives of penury in the factories of the new Britain. Maybe this all had to be? Agricultural production was inefficient and haphazard. Maybe it was a massive redistribution of wealth from the poor to the rich? I'd like to say I was sitting on the fence but I guess that would make me a fan of the enclosures. A balanced view would be that it was necessary to streamline food production. However, to do so with little concern or compensation for the poor was shameful.

A by-product of the enclosures was a meager provision of allotments. When I was a child fewer and fewer people wanted them. I grew up in the era of increasing fast food and the endless pursuit of consumerist status. A family day out in the 1960's could be an outing to a motorway service area.  All action causes a reaction and these days there are queues of middle class people seeking to go green and organic with their own plot of soil. Hard financial times also inspire folk to try and save money by growing their own. I had an uncle whose allotment in Deptford was nothing but a weed patch with some straggly chrysanthemums  All the same he went most days to sit in his shed to read his horse racing news and oversee his beer and wine production. He died of liver failure although his wife never saw him drink at all.

The control of local allotments often involves the parish council which is the lowest tier of British government. A recent parish council election in my local area of Hampshire UK brought out a full array of party political candidates. A politically ambitious young conservative hopeful (I guess that's more like a republican), turned out dressed in a tweed suit, a paisley cravat and a monocle. He looked like Bertie Wooster. He was duly elected. I'm watching his rise in the galaxy of stars. David Cameron watch out. In Shannon's Law there are some strange goings on among the fruit and veg'.

BLURB

Wild child inner-city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. When she encounters signs of slave and drug trafficking she homes in on serious millionaire criminals.

As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need.

Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl's bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.

Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her.

All issues are set aside, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission. Their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.

EXCERPT

“It looks like a Chinese Red Army issue sub-machine gun.”
“Why would the Red Army be on the allotments?”
“Terrorists or reactionary forces.”
“Marrow rustlers or guerrilla French Onion Johnnies,” she suggested.
